MHOW: Leopards lurking around the famous Patalpani waterfall in
Mhow know exactly which farm to steer clear of when they raid nearby villages. It's not the guard dogs they are fear, but what's around their necks - a spiky trap.
The dogs' owner, farmer Dinesh Rajput, fashioned the spiky collar after leopards killed his favourite pet dog, a cow and her calf.
"I was distraught. When I saw the carcasses, I realized that the leopards clamp their teeth on the neck to cut off the jugular. So, I decided to make a neck armour of sorts that will also act like a weapon," Rajput told TOI.
He got his servants to attach sharpened iron spikes, up to 3 inches long, on collars specially designed to carry the weight. All three of his watchdogs now strut around with spikes. It seems, the leopards got the point.
The dog had only minor injuries and was trembling due to the trauma but lived to bark another day.
